NAME OF INTEREST - Waterside alder-grove

CONCEPT - Natural Heritage

This waterline has a great abundance of alders (Alnus glutinosa) and grey willows (Salix atrocinerea). This waterside alder-grove (habitat 91E0pt1) is part of the alluvial forests of Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior. They are a priority conservation habitat in the EU, because of their relative rarity.
This waterside vegetation is very useful, as it slows the speed of the water, thus diminishing the risk of floods; stabilizes the banks of watercourses, protecting them from erosion; it functions as an ecologic corridor for fauna and flora (a migration route) and also as a food source for several animal species.
Animals typical of this habitat are, amongst others, the otter (Lutra lutra), long-tailed tit (Aegithalos caudatus), dipper (Cinclus cinclus), Iberian emerald lizard (Lacerta schreiberi), the golden-striped salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica) and, in the river itself, brown trout (Salmo trutta) and Iberian nase (Chondrostoma polylepis).
